I think the Audis were mocked a bit back when their big grille debuted. I remember calling this “big mouth bass” back around 2004:

Kinja'd!!!

Seems tame now, and no leering eyes.

Its huge, but it seems like a giant 50s grill where the feature takes up the whole front.

the 4 series, you have the lights angled towards, drawig your eyes in. If the 2 fake brake vents and bottom opening were continous it, I dont think it would be as noticeable.

Instead you ahve white plate, black background, chrome, paint, and black vent glossy headlights. Like a dart board.

The front clip on the Audi still looks like one smooth  shape, the new 4 series just looks like nostrils

I was working for an OEM when that came out. We, and everyone else in the industry , thought “God that’s an eyesore, it’ll never catch on”. And yet here we are...

I remember when Audi asked Rover to cease with the large grille on the Rover 75. As it was in breach of their trademark or something.

Kinja'd!!!

Rover replied, no, we had it first on our 75, the 1949 Rover P 75.

Audi started this big-mouth shit back around ‘05. I still don’t like it.

Gack, the small grille looks much better on the 75.   Bizarre Audi would even try that.

It’s what companies do. Apple tried doing a cease and desist on the BBC with it’s iPlayer arguing that the ‘i’ was Apples trademark. The courts thought otherwise.

American Budweiser did it to Czech Budweiser, saying the Czech company couldn’t use the Budweiser name as it was trademarked for American Budweiser. So the original Czech Budweiser (that formed the American one) has to use the name Budvar everywhere else in the world except Eur ope, where it can e traded under both names.

Hugo Boss is currently in several lawsuits with any company with the word Boss in it’s name, siting breach of trademark, etc...

Big companies being arses.

I guess corporate lawyers need to find ways to justify their employment.  One never knows how a judge might rule.

Yeah, it’s not a nice look.  The previous gens were so much nicer looking.  Definitely not a fan of the new designs.  But also, they don’t look as bad as the BMWs.

I’m still partial to a few generations ago, but the following two gens after mine look really good IMO, but I just can’t afford one yet. ;)

Audi has big grills, but they fit well in the lineup & design. The new 4 series is such a shame because the F80 looked so cool. With the M2, M550, M5, and 8 series, BMW has made some of its nicest looking cars since 2004, but hopefully this direction does not continue.
